I Passed!

Scribed by: Aidan

On September 2nd I took my driving test after passing my theory test about two months ago. I was extremely apprehensive on the day, however, once that I got settled with my instructor in the hour prior to my exam I was much calmer, even more calmer when the examiner and myself got into the car and chatted. He was a good man and I found that he put me at ease.

I was extremely worried a couple of lessons before my test as I had an absolutely diabolical lesson all of three lessons before my test! I lost all my confidence after doing appallingly on spiral roundabouts. I had another lesson a week later but it was a bit shaky and not the best. The lesson before my test day was the day before, so the 1st of September, which incidentally is when my friend took and passed him driving test.

I had a good lesson on the day before my test and I felt it was pretty much the best that I had done so far, which was a massive confidence booster. We went over some spiral roundabouts to put myself at ease and it worked and I am so pleased that we did as one of them came up during my test! I seemed to do ok on it though and didn’t make and stupid mistakes.

I had to do two manoeuvres and I ended up doing the (more…)

Ubuntu Live CD 8.04 and BusyBox…

I decided seeing as I have 500GB worth of hard drive space doing nothing that I would use some of it for an Ubuntu installation as I haven’t yet gtotr round to install Ubuntu after getting my new computer. I thought that I’d run the Live CD just to make sure that it was in full working order. I tell you, I’m pleased I did now seeing as I wasn’t getting the GUI (graphical user interface) that I should have been getting. It’s safe to say that I was slightly perturbed!

Initially I thought there was an issue with the disc, even though the MD5SUM was correct, but after burning a second I realised that it wasn’t the disc. It appears as though this isn’t an uncommon problem. Lots of people seem to have this issue.

I scoured the internet looking for fixes etc, however, I couldn’t really find any that worked, although I eventually came across one. When you enter the Live CD menu screen hit (more…)

Driving Frustration.

Scribed by: Aidan

Today I had what I might call the worst driving lesson that I have ever had. So bad in fact that I quite honestly don’t want to take another lesson. I just can’t believe how badly I did. Every little thing I did I messed up.

By the end of the lesson I was incensed, although I don’t actually think that incensed quite describes it. I could have quite happily during the lesson have just stopped. Normally I have a lot of qualms with money and getting my money’s worth but I would have been more than happy to have just wasted the remainder of the lesson and gone home because it was THAT bad. It didn’t help that I made massive mistake after massive mistake.

Even this blog entry is disjointed and that’s because of how angry I am - sorry for that. I couldn’t even talk to anyone about it when I got in the house, it had just infuriated me that much and right now I would quite happily never learn to drive. It sounds like a knee jerk reaction and it probably is seeing how well I’ve been doing as of late, however, after today you’d have thought that I was still (more…)

Re-Design Part 2.

Scribed by: Aidan

After re-designing my blog, and after thinking about people visiting my personal website I began to wonder whether it gave the correct message. I wanted an emphasis on the web design aspect as well as it to be aesthetically pleasing. I also wanted it to be of a higher standard in terms of the way that I had constructed it.

I decided to look at a simplistic design, one that was easy on the eye but looked nice. I like the dark background light foreground colour scheme, I feel as though it highlights the content and has a classier look about it.

I set off creating it with the idea in mind whereby I would use PHP for the navigation, and that worked fine and I am quite happy with it. I feel as though I am able to use PHP to a basic standard now. Admittedly I don’t know it well, but I know enough to get me by at this moment in time.

After creating the website as a whole I wondered about getting stats on it, and I prefer to use SlimStat, it is relatively easy to install and gives a good accurate reading of visitors etc, however, I soon realised that if I implemented it, every time a page was loaded it would treat it as a completely new visit… It came to me that I could put the code in a header file that stored the heading section of the design and it works a treat, I was quite pleased that I managed to think of doing that!

In order to make sure that there was an emphasis on (more…)

New Theme…

Scribed by: Aidan

I decided that it was time for a change. I found the other theme that I created a bit too dark and boring after having it for a little while… I thought that it could do with a freshen up to be completely honest.

I started out creating this theme for textpattern as I thought that I’d give it a go. Ben over at Openswitch used to rave over it and thought that it was perhaps time that I broadened my horizons and gave it a try… It all went well and I was happy with the outcome of the format of the pages etc, however, the issue that I was having was plugins… They’re not as plain and simple as (more…)
